On Off-Cuts (2014–2021), UK producer Scarper revisits a formative era with a collection that feels built for the present moment.
Some releases arrive with a plan. Others emerge from a rediscovery.
For Scarper, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) began with a return to the hard drive: a search through demos, sketches, jams and nearly forgotten projects from a seven-year stretch of creative work. What he found was not a collection of abandoned ideas, but eight distinctive tracks that still carried the energy, emotion and sonic detail needed to stand on their own.
Now brought together as a carefully curated retrospective, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) offers an engaging trip through Scarper’s expansive musical world. From house and techno to acid-laced machine funk and atmospheric electronica, the release captures the creative freedom of an artist working without boundaries.
The opener, “Skynet,” sets an immediate emotional tone. Its sweeping chords and dramatic scale make for a powerful introduction, balancing euphoria with a deeper sense of reflection. “Steppe” takes the route of playful, underground intensity, combining sharp acid squelches with a groove that refuses to stand still. By the time “Halocline” arrives, Scarper shifts the focus again — allowing gorgeous strings and spacious arrangement to create a delicate, immersive electronic moment.
This constant movement between styles is not accidental. Scarper’s work has always been defined by range. He can build a functional club record with a direct, physical impact, then turn around and make something melodic, elegant and emotionally detailed. On Off-Cuts (2014–2021), those instincts coexist naturally.
The collection also provides new context for the period that produced Scarper’s critically acclaimed debut album Warmer Squares and “E-Funk,” his 2020 single that has become a dancefloor favourite and is currently receiving fresh attention through a new physical release.
Scarper explains:
“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world. It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”
That snapshot is revealing. The tracks carry the hallmarks of an artist inspired by the past but never trapped by it. There are flashes of classic rave, house and techno history throughout, but Scarper’s productions are never merely referential. They are warm, characterful and crafted with an ear for how electronic music can make people feel — whether in a club, on a late-night drive or through headphones at home.
Scarper’s approach has earned respect from across the electronic spectrum. He has previously received support from Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig, while his productions have landed radio spins on Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music. His output has also attracted attention from leading dance music titles, including Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R.
Working almost exclusively via his own Plexus Records, Scarper remains an artist with full control over his direction. Off-Cuts (2014–2021) reflects that independence: it is not a release shaped by algorithms or trends, but by the belief that worthwhile music deserves to be heard.
With eight tracks finally stepping out of the archive and into the world, Scarper offers both a look back at a defining creative period and a timely reminder of why his music continues to connect.
